The Microwave Method

One of the most effective methods when it comes to reheating any type of meal is the oven. The microwave is quick and efficient even when it comes to reheating mushrooms. Microwaves offer a convenient way to reheat all sorts of mushrooms. However, microwave cooking can dry out your mushrooms further, as such it is important to heat your leftover mushrooms to at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, if you cooked your mushrooms and later kept them in the refrigerator, it is safe to reheat mushrooms in the microwave. Simply treat them as you would treat meat. Mushrooms are mainly water, so they reheat well in the microwave. Make sure that you warm your mushrooms on low power. Depending on your cooking technique the texture of your mushrooms can change when you heat them over high heat. Simply follow these steps to reheat your mushrooms in the microwave.

  1. Place your mushrooms in an oven safe dish,
  2. Cover the dish with a damp (not wet) paper towel. The moisture from the paper towel will help keep your mushrooms hydrated while reheating,
  3. Microwave your mushrooms in 30 second intervals until they are just warm enough to enjoy. Ensure that you do not overcook and serve when ready,

Keep in mind that microwaves do not kill off all bacteria. For example, the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus can cause food poisoning plus it is resistant to heat. Thus, if mushrooms are left out overnight, they could present a health hazard even if you decide to microwave them.

The Oven Method

Another effective method to reheat mushrooms is in the oven. This oven method is simple and it does not take a lot of time. This method allows your mushrooms to retain their juiciness and taste. You only need an oven tray or pan, a bit of oil, or spray (optional) and your left over mushrooms. Simply follow these steps to reheat your mushrooms in the oven.

  1. First preheat your oven to at least 300 degrees Fahrenheit,
  2. Place your mushrooms in an oven tray or pan big enough to accommodate the amount of mushrooms you want to heat up.
  3. Place your dish or pan in the preheated oven,
  4. Let your mushrooms cook for about 20 minutes or so before removing them and check the temperature,
  5. Simply put your mushrooms back in the oven if they have not warmed up well. Make sure you check your mushrooms after every 5 minutes. Your mushrooms should be ready to serve after a bit of time.

The Stove top Method

If you want to reheat the mushrooms on the stove top, it is best to do this in a pot or pan on the stove and heat the dish to at least on medium to low heat so that all the germs can be killed. Warming up your mushrooms on the stove top is quick and also effective.

Follow these steps to heat up your mushrooms on the stove top,

  • Get a non-stick pan or regular pan or pot and add some olive oil, and a bit of water,
  • Allow your pan to heat up on a low flame,
  • Add your mushrooms and allow them to heat up properly for about 1-2 minutes on each side.
  • Once finished, take them out. Your mushrooms should be ready to serve,

When reheating your mushrooms on the stove, you can add a bit of water in the pan or pot. Once the stove is hot, leave the pot or pan there so that it will add some steam to the warming process. Don’t reheat over very high heat or else you will overcook your mushrooms. Check your mushrooms every 10-15 minutes until they are just warmed through properly. The water will not totally keep them from drying out a little, but it does help when reheating mushrooms on the stove top. You will require a non-stick pan or a regular pan or por for your mushrooms.

Safe Storage Tips

  • Leftover mushrooms should be refrigerated no later than two hours after cooking. This includes the time that the food is sitting on the table or on your plate.
  • If your mushrooms were left on the dinner table overnight, it is best to throw them away.
  • Store your leftover mushrooms in a shallow dish, less than 3 inches deep, leaving some air spaces around them to let cold air get to the food.
  • Set the refrigerator at 36 to 38 degrees Fahrenheit to keep the temperature inside below the safe limit of 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • If you leave stuffed mushrooms out all night at room temperature, they will not be safe to eat. Bacteria can grow at a rapid rate, so even if they are exposed to the air for just a few hours, mushrooms can present a health hazard.
  • If you properly store and reheat your mushrooms, however, they should be safe to eat the following day.
  • In hot climates with temperatures of 90 degrees Fahrenheit or more, food such as mushrooms should be refrigerated for a maximum of one hour after cooking.
  • Heat allows bacteria to multiply faster and the food will spoil more quickly.
  • In very hot environments, refrigerator door temperatures can rise and fall thus, It’s safer to store leftover food in the coldest part of the fridge, like on the middle shelf.
